FIFA Best Footballer Award – Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi is officially the Best Footballer for the year 2009 according to FIFA. The managers of the national teams voted for Messi and the two times second placed candidate finally got this great distinction.
Lionel Messi has already win the Champions League, European Super Cup, Spanish Championship and Cup as well the Spanish Super Cup. He also is the winner of the Golden Ball.
There were five candidates for the FIFA Best Footballer award of 2009. Besides Lionel Messi , there were Xavi and Iniesta from Barcelona as well as Kaka and Christiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid. (Kaka win the distinction at 2007 and Christiano Ronaldo at 2008).
A delighted Lionel Messi stated after he received his award: “It was a fantastic year. I am promising that I will try to do my best for Barcelona and Argentina. This award is the best way to conclude a successful year”.
In the voting for the FIFA Best Footballer Award the national managers participate having the ability to vote for three players. Their first choice was awarded with five points, the second choice with three and the last choice with one point.
FIFA Best Footballer Award started on 1991 and the first winner was Lotar Mattheus (GER – Inter Milan).
